Sonequa Martin-Green is open to Tom Selleck returning to the Blue Bloods universe.

The Boston Blue star, 41, revealed in a recent interview with Woman’s World that those on the spinoff have been “talking about Mr. Selleck for a long time.”

Selleck, 81, starred as NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan in all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods from 2010 to 2024. In Boston Blue, Martin-Green leads as Boston Police Department detective Lena Silver, the partner of Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan, a character who originated in the initial series.

When asked who she’d choose if she could bring any of the Blue Bloods characters to the spinoff, Martin-Green shared her hopes for a mini Reagan family reunion. “[Selleck] is always getting asked and as Donnie always says, the door’s open,” Martin-Green said, following the show’s season 1 finale. “We would love to have him and we will make sure the story is just right because Tom is so adamant about the story, as he should be and as we all should be.”
She added, “I think it would be great if we can have him and I’m excited for whatever story it ends up being if he does come.”

Martin-Green also shared that she’s thrilled when “anybody from Blue Bloods comes over because I really believe that it legitimizes us.” So far, aside from Wahlberg, returnees have included Len Cariou (Henry Reagan), Bridget Moynahan (Erin Reagan), Marisa Ramirez (Maria Baez) and Will Hochman (Joe Hill). “It’s almost like they give us their blessing when they come on and we make sure they know that,” Martin-Green said. “We applaud them, we give them standing ovations. We’re like, ‘Thank you for coming,’ because we know we’re standing on their shoulders.”

She concluded, “I want everybody from Blue Bloods on this show but it’d be nice to see Tom [Selleck].”
The Boston Blue star shared a similar sentiment with TV Insider following the season finale in May. “Let’s have people from our predecessor come. We’re standing on the shoulders of Blue Bloods,” she said. “And so every single time that somebody from our predecessor, every single time they can come, it adds to us. It adds a richness. It adds a legitimacy to us. That’s what I think. And so I want everybody to come. But yeah, we were super excited to have [Will Hochman], and he fit right in. Everybody just fits right in. It was such a joy.”
Selleck did not make an appearance in Boston Blue’s premiere season, however, his character was referenced several times. Last fall, weeks after the spinoff premiered, Selleck shared during an interview with Hour Detroit that he didn’t “know if I would do Boston Blue.”

“That’s another show,” Selleck said. “I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan.”

The Emmy winner also called the cancellation of Blue Bloods a “huge disappointment” and reiterated he still doesn’t “know why CBS did it.” Wahlberg also floated a Selleck appearance in a June 2025 interview with Parade, noting that “New York and Boston are really close.” He said he “spoke to Tom the minute I was deciding if this was something I was going to do.”

“And I can’t really get into the details of those conversations, but he’s been very supportive,” Wahlberg said. “I can say, would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes. Tom’s always going to base his decisions on the work and material, and so yes, of course, I’d love to work with him on the show, and when the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it.”
