The show has been going on for 6 faithful seasons, and currently, the show will be returning for a 7th season. Amidst the return, Netflix drops another exciting announcement of how the show has been renewed for an 8th season. Exciting news, right?
The news would have been tantalizing to the ears, but the series has a critical issue with the relationship between Lizzie and Denny, which has been an eyesore for us to watch. Though there are many problems revolving around the two, the fans’ concern about how the show is wasting their potential must be taken care of sooner or later, before advancing further.
Netflix’s Virgin River Gets Renewed for Season 8
Another season of sipping wine and finding out secrets by the river. In what can be justified as a shocking move, Netflix has announced that fans can expect Virgin River to get an early renewal, ahead of the release of Virgin River Season 7. The news comes in the wake of Season 7 wrapping up its production in Vancouver, Canada, and a quick pit stop in Mexico in the first half of the year.
During the press conference for the show’s early renewal via Tudum by Netflix, Patrick Sean Smith mentioned that the streamer has given them the thumbs up to narrate the story of Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) and the people around them.
He said,
On behalf of myself and the whole Virgin River family, we’re eternally grateful to Netflix and to the fans for allowing us to continue on this journey with these beloved characters.
To make the news all the more exciting, the showrunner gave a sneak peek of what to expect in the cosy town in Season 7. He said,
Season 7 will find Mel and Jack taking their first steps into marriage as they start to plan for and build a life and family together. Meanwhile, Doc and Hope will work together to protect the clinic and the integrity of the town from outsiders.
The news felt like a blessing to the ears, where fans would get 20 episodes to binge-watch, a combined total from Seasons 7 and 8. However, the show’s cliffhanger ending and ruined character potential must be addressed in Season 7 before the show goes astray and becomes a topic of public nuisance.
Virgin River Needs to Address Its Major Problem in Season 7
Season 6 of Virgin River ended last year in December 2024, and it has scrambled our brains with the cliffhanger ending. The conclusion was meant to be a setup for the upcoming season, but it has some glaring issues that should be taken care of for the best. First things first, Season 6 was perhaps the best season that we have watched till now, and it was chaotic in the 2nd half of the final season.
However, the strong narrative fell short around Charmaine Roberts (Lauren Hammersley), where it was hard to swallow the fact that everyone in the town felt it was normal for a woman to gaslight Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) to raise two babies who were not biologically his. As if that were not enough, she went missing, unable to attend Mike Valenzuela (Marco Grazzini) and Melinda “Mel” Monroe’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) wedding, leaving its viewers feeling indifferent towards her, especially because of her character.
Needless to say, the bad writing of the character and her plotline in the show did not gel well with the audience, making it a big miss and making them feel that it was poorly borrowed to add some drama. Another major concern following the book adaptation is how the writers are wasting the potential of the characters, making them skim past scenes.
The main concerns that fans have addressed are how the show is too hellbent on focusing on the main characters of the show, where Mel was reconnecting with Everett Reid (John Allen Nelson), her biological father. In the midst, the show sprinkled some drama with Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale) and Denny Cutler (Kai Bradbury), which had become too strained and overly dramatic, causing them to skip their scenes.
Their primary issue with their saga is that it feels too stale and flat, making it “seem off” about them, leading to some viewers walking away from the show. Clearly, Virgin River must get its act together and draw up a meaningful scenario featuring these characters, else it will have a 1899-like fate.
