Grey’s Anatomy Season 23 causes a stir: Veteran doctors Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman officially leave Grey Sloan.
After more than two decades on air, Grey’s Anatomy once again shocked fans by confirming the departure of two long-time characters: Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman. The ending of season 22 not only closed an important chapter in the show’s history but also paved the way for a completely new era in season 23.
The news that actor Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt) and actress Kim Raver (Teddy Altman) were leaving the series was announced before the final episode of season 22 aired. This is considered one of the biggest cast changes for Grey’s Anatomy in recent years.
Joining Grey’s Anatomy in season 5, Owen Hunt quickly became one of the most beloved characters. A trauma doctor who served in the military, Owen portrays a strong yet vulnerable character. He experiences numerous hardships, from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a broken marriage to Cristina Yang to a long-term relationship with Teddy Altman.
Appearing from season 6, Teddy Altman made his mark thanks to his talent in cardiac surgery and his calm, dedicated personality towards his patients.
The long-standing relationship between Teddy and Owen is one of the most tumultuous love stories in Grey’s Anatomy history. They missed each other, hurt each other, but ultimately found their way back to each other.
Therefore, the simultaneous departure of both characters felt to many viewers as the end of an entire era.

The departures of Owen and Teddy leave a huge void in the hospital. Not only has Grey Sloan lost two experienced doctors, but it also lacks those who previously mentored the younger physicians. This means that characters like Simone Griffith, Lucas Adams, Jules Millin, Benson Kwan, and Ben Warren will have to take on more responsibilities in season 23.
Although they are no longer the main cast, the possibility of Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman returning in special episodes is not entirely closed.
Many sources in the entertainment industry indicate that the door remains open for Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver if future storylines require their presence. This has happened with many other characters from Grey’s Anatomy in the past.
When season 23 airs, Grey Sloan Memorial will be a different place. But these farewells could open up new stories, new doctors, and a challenging next chapter for this legendary medical series.
