Timothy McGee has spent more than two decades building his life around NCIS, but Season 24 could force him to consider something he has rarely been willing to do: step away. After years of dangerous investigations, McGee is no longer simply the younger agent fans first met in Season 1. He is now an experienced federal agent, a husband, a father and, most recently, the parent of a teenage son whose sudden arrival has completely changed his world. The Season 23 finale made that family situation even more complicated when McGee’s son Mateo became involved in a dangerous confrontation with Nick Torres. With Season 24 promising major changes, the question is no longer simply whether McGee can handle another case. It is whether protecting his family could eventually become more important than staying at NCIS.
McGee Is Facing a Different Kind of Threat
For most of his NCIS career, McGee has been able to separate his professional life from his family life. He understands that his job is dangerous, but he has usually accepted that danger as part of being an agent. That becomes much harder when the danger begins reaching his children. Season 23 introduced Mateo, McGee’s 18-year-old son from a previous relationship, and the two have been trying to establish a relationship after years apart. TV Insider reported that McGee was hopeful that spending time with Mateo through an NCIS cyber internship opportunity could help them become closer.
Instead, their relationship became tied to one of the season’s biggest cliffhangers. The finale ended with Torres confronting Mateo, followed by a gunshot before the episode revealed who had been hit. That unresolved moment puts McGee in an emotionally difficult position heading into Season 24. Whatever happened between Torres and Mateo, McGee cannot simply treat it like another case. This time, the consequences are personal.
His Family Has Become More Complicated
McGee’s family has always been an important part of his character, but Mateo’s arrival gives the writers a completely different opportunity. McGee now has to balance his established life with Delilah and their children against a son who is suddenly becoming part of his world. That situation could make him question some of the choices he has made throughout his career. For years, McGee could justify the risks of NCIS because the job was something he believed in. But becoming more involved in Mateo’s life could make those risks feel very different.
The question becomes especially interesting because McGee has already demonstrated that he values family deeply. He is not the inexperienced agent who once needed Gibbs and Tony to teach him how to survive the job. He has become someone capable of making his own decisions. If protecting his children requires a major career change, he now has the experience and authority to make that choice.
The Season 23 Cliffhanger Could Push Him Too Far
The confrontation involving Mateo and Torres could become the turning point. Season 23 ended without revealing exactly what happened, leaving McGee’s family situation hanging over the beginning of the next season. PEOPLE described the finale as a major cliffhanger, with Torres confronting Mateo and both characters reaching for their guns before a single shot was heard.
That kind of event could make McGee reconsider how close his family should be to the dangers surrounding NCIS. Even if Mateo survives the confrontation unharmed, the experience could change the way McGee sees his career. He may realize that his professional world has already begun affecting his family in ways he can no longer ignore. If Mateo becomes a target because of his connection to McGee, leaving the team could suddenly look less like giving up and more like protecting the people he loves.
But McGee Still Has a Reason to Stay
There is an equally strong argument against McGee leaving. NCIS is not simply McGee’s workplace anymore. It is part of his identity. He has spent more than 20 years growing from a nervous technical specialist into one of the team’s most experienced agents. As of the current cast lineup, Sean Murray remains part of Season 24, alongside Gary Cole, Wilmer Valderrama, Katrina Law, Brian Dietzen and Diona Reasonover.
That makes a permanent departure difficult to imagine without a major story reason. McGee has survived countless changes within the agency. Gibbs left. Tony left. Ziva left. Abby left. Ducky’s death changed the team forever. Even the leadership structure has changed dramatically. Yet McGee remained. He has become one of the strongest links between the original NCIS era and the current team.
He Could Choose Family Without Leaving Forever
The writers do not necessarily have to choose between McGee staying exactly where he is and McGee leaving NCIS completely. Season 24 could explore a middle ground. McGee could temporarily step away from field work, reduce his involvement in dangerous assignments or take on a different role that allows him to spend more time with his family. Such a storyline would give the character meaningful development without permanently removing him from the series.
This would also fit McGee’s evolution. He has already moved beyond the role of the team’s resident technical expert. He has experience, leadership skills and an enormous amount of institutional knowledge. A different position could allow him to use those abilities while reducing some of the risks that come with field investigations. If the writers want to explore his family responsibilities, this could be a natural next step.
The Return of Tony DiNozzo Could Matter
Michael Weatherly’s return as Tony DiNozzo for Season 24 could make McGee’s decision even more interesting. Tony and McGee have a history that goes all the way back to the early years of the series. Tony used to tease McGee as the inexperienced “Probie,” but their relationship eventually developed into a genuine friendship. Now, Tony is returning as the head of the private security company Salus Mondiale and will be involved in a major Season 24 storyline.
That reunion could give McGee someone from his past who understands exactly what it means to build a life around NCIS. Tony himself eventually left the agency to focus on raising his daughter Tali. Seeing Tony return while McGee is struggling with his own responsibilities could create an interesting parallel. McGee could look at Tony’s life and wonder whether there is another path available to him.
McGee’s Son Could Become His Greatest Motivation
Mateo’s arrival changes the emotional stakes of McGee’s story because he is not simply another family member the character needs to protect. He is someone McGee is still getting to know. That means McGee has lost years with his son and now has an opportunity to build a relationship with him. If the Season 23 cliffhanger puts that relationship in jeopardy, McGee could become even more determined to be present in Mateo’s life.
This could create a conflict that is far more personal than anything McGee has previously faced. NCIS has always asked its agents to sacrifice time with their families for the sake of the job. McGee may eventually decide that he has already sacrificed enough. Choosing family would not necessarily mean he has stopped caring about NCIS. It could simply mean his priorities have changed.

The Team Would Feel His Absence
If McGee ever did leave, the emotional impact on the NCIS team would be enormous. He is currently the longest-serving cast member and one of the few remaining characters who connects today’s team directly to the show’s earliest years. His departure would therefore represent more than another cast change. It would mark the end of one of the final links to the original NCIS era.
Parker, Torres, Knight, Palmer and Kasie have built their own chemistry, but McGee occupies a unique place within that group. He understands the team’s history in a way few others can. He has worked alongside Gibbs, Tony, Ziva, Abby, Bishop and countless other former agents. Losing him would change the emotional identity of the office, even if the investigations continued normally.
Sean Murray’s Future Makes the Question More Complicated
For now, however, there is no confirmed indication that Sean Murray is leaving the series. Current Season 24 cast information continues to list Murray as McGee, and recent coverage of the upcoming season specifically includes him among the returning cast. That means any theory about McGee leaving should be treated as speculation rather than a confirmed storyline.
Still, the fact that the question feels plausible says something about how much McGee has changed. Twenty-three seasons ago, it would have been difficult to imagine him becoming one of the show’s central family men. Now, his children and personal responsibilities are as important to his character as his career. That creates a natural opportunity for Season 24 to explore what happens when those two worlds finally collide.
Family Could Be the Choice McGee Never Expected to Make
McGee has spent most of his adult life proving that he belongs at NCIS. He became an agent, earned the respect of his colleagues and survived the departure of nearly everyone who once defined the team. But Season 24 could ask him a different question: What does he want his life to look like when the badge is no longer the most important thing?
His family may ultimately provide the answer. Whether McGee stays at NCIS, temporarily steps away or eventually chooses a completely different career path, Mateo’s arrival has changed the equation. The danger surrounding his son could force him to confront a truth that many longtime agents eventually face: protecting people sometimes means knowing when to walk away.
For now, McGee is still part of NCIS. But after everything that happened in Season 23, his future may no longer be defined solely by the cases waiting for him at the office. Season 24 could reveal that the biggest case McGee has to solve is not about a criminal, a conspiracy or a missing piece of evidence. It may be about deciding what matters most when his career and his family can no longer safely exist on opposite sides of the line.
