Sad news from Hollywood: *Blue Bloods* star passes away at 44 hue01

Tom Selleck is heading back to TV.

The Emmy Award-winning actor, known for playing NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on the long-running CBS drama as well as Dr. Richard Burke on Friends, is joining Elizabeth Banks’ upcoming Apple TV comedy as a guest star.

Selleck will appear alongside Banks and the series’ ensemble cast, which includes Ted Danson, Rob Delaney, Katey Sagal, Jared Goldstein and Spencer Moss.

The untitled half-hour comedy centers on Heidi (Banks), a recently divorced mother trying to figure out what comes next for herself and her children. Her plans take an unexpected turn when she gets involved in her father’s retirement community sex dates, eventually leading her into an unlikely alliance with his girlfriend’s perpetually single son, according to Apple TV.

The series comes from creators Liz Heldens and Matt Ward and is expected to begin production in Los Angeles this year. It is produced for Apple TV by 20th Television, with Heldens and Ward serving as showrunners and executive producers. Banks also executive produces with Max Handelman and Krissy Wall through her Brownstone Productions banner, according to Apple TV.

Selleck’s casting comes nearly two years after Blue Bloods aired its final episode in December 2024. He starred on the CBS series for all 14 seasons and also served as an executive producer.

The actor has been open about his disappointment over the show’s cancellation. During a July appearance on Danson’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, Selleck revealed that the cast had already taken a 25% salary cut in an effort to keep the series going.

“And the real truth to that is, in the last year… at our last family dinner, everybody wanted to come back. We’d already taken a 25% cut in salary. We’d already done all sorts of things to keep the show going,” Selleck said.

Despite those efforts, CBS announced the cancellation in November 2023.

“It was very frustrating because Blue Bloods was, out of the top 100 shows on broadcast television, Blue Bloods was No. 6 in our 15th year,” Selleck said on the podcast. “Nobody wanted to leave, everybody was gonna stay on. That’s hard to get.”

Selleck also spoke about the close relationship among the cast, describing Blue Bloods as a “labor of love” and saying the series never had the kind of behind-the-scenes tension he had seen on other productions.

“Blue Bloods was never that,” he said.
