Kristen Stewart’s wife Dylan Meyer was surprised at how different the actress was from her public persona when they met.
“I was like, ‘I can’t believe anyone ever let this person be a teen idol,’” Meyer told PEOPLE about what she remembers thinking. “‘She’s such a deadbeat like me. Like, that’s so crazy. She’s been miscast.’”
Meyer was, of course, referring to Stewart’s fame as Bella in the phenomenally popular Twilight movies, the first of which was released in 2008, when the actress dubbed KStew was just 18. By then, Stewart had already appeared in movies such as the 2002 thriller Panic Room, with Jodie Foster, and the 2007 adventure Into the Wild, alongside Emile Hirsch, William Hurt, and Catherine Kenner.
Meyer, who married Stewart in April 2025, meant her words as a compliment.
She and Stewart had met during filming of 2015’s American Ultra, in which Stewart starred alongside Jesse Eisenberg and Connie Britton. But they only began dating years afterward.
“At the time we just thought each other were really rad,” she said. “Six or seven years went by, then we were falling in love.”
Stewart, for her part, told Howard Stern as far back as November 2019 that she was crazy about Meyer.
“Literally, the day that I met her, it was like all bets were off,” Stewart said. “I met her years ago on a movie and I hadn’t seen her in six years and then she rocked up at a friend’s birthday party, and I was like, ‘Where have you been and how have I not known you?’ She’s been living in L.A. alongside my life somehow, but not ever converging.”
She marveled at their similarities.
“We’re both from L.A., and we really love L.A., and we’re both kind of like scumbags,” Stewart said. “We both felt like trolls as kids, and we’re so similar but different.” She added that Meyer is “a writer, just brilliant.”

Just this month, Stewart raved about working with Meyer on their new movie The Wrong Girls, a stoner comedy that Meyer directed and wrote and Stewart stars in alongside Alia Shawkat, Cate Blanchett, and LaKeith Stanfield.
“Dylan has this beautiful, delicate, gentle, inviting ability to be like, ‘This is yours,’” Stewart told E! News. “And so the crew was ready to jump into any hot or cold water for her. It was so much fun to make this movie.”
The Wrong Girls is in theaters now.
