The Lincoln Lawyer Brings Diverse Stories to Netflix as Manuel Garcia-Rulfo Steps Into an Iconic Role
When Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer premiered, audiences were introduced to a fresh take on Mickey Haller, the charismatic defense attorney originally portrayed by Matthew McConaughey in the 2011 film adaptation of Michael Connelly’s bestselling novel. Taking over the iconic role is Mexican actor Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, who says the opportunity has been both humbling and rewarding.
Garcia-Rulfo admitted that stepping into Haller’s shoes was a dream come true.
“I’m very honored, thankful and proud to be playing an iconic character like Mickey Haller and to be part of the incredible world Michael Connelly created. Being part of it is truly a blessing,” he shared.
Beyond the role itself, Garcia-Rulfo expressed appreciation for the show’s multicultural cast, which mirrors the diversity of modern-day Los Angeles and its thriving immigrant communities. However, portraying the sharp-witted attorney came with unique challenges. As English is his second language, mastering lengthy courtroom monologues filled with complex legal terminology proved to be one of the toughest aspects of the job.
“Learning all those courtroom speeches and legal terms was very difficult,” he admitted. “Pronouncing everything correctly was probably the hardest part.”
The series also shines a spotlight on Filipino talent. Veteran Filipino-American actor Reggie Lee plays a man accused of human trafficking, a role that initially gave him pause. Ultimately, what convinced him to take the part was the opportunity to explore the human side of a difficult story.
Lee said he was drawn to the character because it reflects the realities faced by many Filipino immigrants striving to build better lives in America.
“The struggles of Filipino Americans trying to survive, support their families, and create opportunities for themselves are very real,” he explained. “Sometimes it only takes one wrong turn for everything to fall apart. That’s what made the story so human and compelling.”
Although he initially hesitated to accept the role, Lee eventually embraced the project after recognizing the depth behind the character and the chance to collaborate with acclaimed producers David E. Kelley and Ted Humphrey.
Off-screen, Lee is also expanding his career behind the camera. The actor is currently developing Concepcion, a television project co-produced with ABS-CBN, marking his first Hollywood venture as a producer.
Lee believes that increasing Filipino representation in entertainment remains crucial.
“For Asian Americans, especially Filipinos, we have to keep pushing forward,” he said. “People are finally beginning to recognize who Filipinos are. We’re the second-largest Asian-American community in the United States, yet we remain one of the least represented in media.”
The series further highlights Filipino talent through appearances by actors Katrina Rosita and Jeff Francisco.
Meanwhile, actress Neve Campbell takes on the role of a determined government attorney who finds herself on the opposite side of Lee’s character. Through the storyline, Campbell said she gained a deeper awareness of the devastating impact of human trafficking.
“For decades, I’ve been aware of the millions of people affected by this issue,” Campbell said. “Sadly, we still struggle to find effective solutions, which makes it even more important to continue searching for answers.”
Adding another layer to the drama is actor Christopher Gorham, who portrays a billionaire client seeking Mickey Haller’s legal expertise. According to Gorham, the show delivers exactly what fans of legal thrillers crave.
“This series is perfect for people who love legal dramas and true-crime stories,” he said. “Viewers can immerse themselves in a fascinating case, try to solve the mystery alongside the characters, and enjoy great performances and smart writing along the way.”
Combining high-stakes courtroom battles, compelling social issues, and a cast that reflects the diversity of contemporary America, The Lincoln Lawyer offers more than just another legal drama. It delivers suspense, emotion, and thought-provoking storytelling that continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
The Lincoln Lawyer began streaming on Netflix on May 13.
