Twilight author Stephenie Meyer and her main character Bella Swan aren’t nearly as alike as one would think — especially when it comes to picking partners.

The 51-year-old writer and film producer was asked if Bella was at all based on herself during a Wednesday Good Morning America interview in honor of Twilight’s 20th anniversary.

“She is someone that I would be friends with,” Meyer replied. “I also am an introvert. I’m shy. I like to read. A lot of her opinions that she has on things are kind of the opposite of mine. I would not have probably chosen the vampire.”

Meyer is — spoiler alert? — referencing how Bella ultimately chooses to marry the vampire Edward Cullen over her childhood bestie (and secret werewolf) Jacob Black.

“Does that mean you’d go team werewolf?” Good Morning America correspondent Juju Chang quipped.

“Probably team werewolf,” Meyer agreed. “I did marry the boy I grew up with, like the family friend that I’d known since I was four. So that’s definitely more my style.”

Bella, Edward, and Jacob were one of the biggest love triangles of the early aughts, sparking endless fan wars when the Twilight books were first released and again years later when they were adapted for the big screen, starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner. A television adaptation of the books is also in development at Lionsgate.

While speaking with Good Morning America, Meyer explained that she believed that people were drawn to Bella as a character because she was relatable.

“I think a lot of our heroines that we get in books are adventurous, they’re wielding swords and they’re doing derring-dos,” she said. “But Bella is a quiet girl. She reads books. We don’t get a lot of readers as our heroes.”

Meyer certainly isn’t the only one who feels like Bella and Jacob should’ve ended up together in the end. Last November, Lautner posted a hilarious TikTok showing Bella and Edward’s wedding scene with the caption, “Honestly, screw Edward. Bella should have ended up with Jacob.”

Lautner then pretended to “accidentally” flip the camera over to reveal that it was him making the bold declaration. “Oops,” he captioned the post.
