Season 23 offers the perfect opportunity to redefine that balance.

Instead of forcing Meredith back into the spotlight full-time, the writers could embrace her new role as the series’ guiding presence. She can continue influencing Grey Sloan’s future through mentorship, groundbreaking research, or major hospital decisions while allowing newer doctors to experience the triumphs and heartbreaks that once defined her own journey.

It’s a difficult balancing act, but one the show can no longer avoid.

Holding on too tightly to Meredith risks preventing newer characters from fully developing. Letting go of her entirely, however, would strip Grey’s Anatomy of the emotional connection that has kept millions of viewers invested for more than two decades.

Perhaps the answer isn’t choosing one over the other.

Perhaps Season 23 can finally prove that Grey’s Anatomy no longer needs Meredith Grey to lead every episode—but it will always need her to remind audiences where the story began.
