The scrubs are officially in the bin. In a casting move that has television fans doing a collective double-take, Kevin McKidd has signed on to join the cast of Hulu’s upcoming legal thriller, Conviction. For anyone who has spent the last two decades watching him navigate the endless supply of tragedy at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, seeing him trade medical trauma for legal drama is a massive shift. Owen Hunt has finally left the building.

This upcoming series represents McKidd’s very first major television role since wrapping up his massive 18-year run on Grey’s Anatomy. For a network looking to build instant anticipation, snagging one of Shondaland’s most recognizable veterans is a certified win.

While the exact details surrounding McKidd’s specific character has not been shared, we do know he will be starring opposite the reigning queen of prestige television, Elisabeth Moss. Moss is set to lead the series as Neve Harper, a highly successful defense attorney whose life completely unravels during a career-defining murder case

Hulu is clearly not skimping on the supporting talent. McKidd and Moss are anchoring an incredibly stacked ensemble cast that includes: Linda Emond, Jimmi Simpson, Sebastian De Souza, Adam Godley and Ashley Zukerman. With a lineup like that, the onscreen chemistry is bound to be electric, even if the characters are busy lying to each other’s faces.

Adapted from the popular 2024 novel by Jack Jordan, Conviction follows Neve Harper as she defends a husband accused of burning down his family home with his wife trapped inside. Just as the high-stakes trial begins, a mysterious stranger blackmails Neve. She is forced into a corner: intentionally lose the case to secure an acquittal, or watch her own dark secrets get exposed to the world.

Behind the scenes, the pedigree is just as strong. The series is being spearheaded by showrunner David Shore, the mind behind House and The Good Doctor. Shore knows exactly how to pace a procedural drama, and pairing his structured storytelling with the dark, twisty nature of Jordan’s novel is a match made in television heaven. Moss is also serving as an executive producer, ensuring her signature touch is all over the project.

Seeing McKidd without a stethoscope is crazy, but this career pivot is exactly what the actor needs. After nearly two decades of playing the same character, diving into a sleek, fast-paced streaming thriller allows him to stretch those acting muscles again.
