Dearest Gentle Reader,
We would be amiss if we didn’t start a Bridgerton article like that, right? Exciting news has emerged that Netflix’s original period drama is tipped to make its debut back into society sooner than expected. Here’s all you need to know about Netflix’s popular period drama.

When will Bridgerton Season 5 be released?

Bridgerton Season 5 is expected to premiere in 2027; however, the exact date hasn’t been confirmed yet, nor has Season 6. We do know that this will be the first time there won’t be a two-year gap between seasons, as filming for season five began in March 2026. Typically, Netflix has dropped whole seasons of Bridgerton at once, but Season 4 was the outlier, releasing in two parts.

What is Bridgerton?

TV show golden duo Executive Producer, Shonda Rhimes and Creator Chris Van Dusen, who both worked on Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, came together once again in 2010 to create Netflix’s very own guilty-pleasure period drama, Bridgerton.
Bridgerton explores the life, scandals and misadventures of the prestigious Bridgerton family living in the early 1800s. As they navigate high society, each of the eight siblings (and their mother) embarks on individual quests for love while avoiding the constant drama and gossip.
As if appearing dignified in high society wasn’t difficult enough, a spanner is thrown in the works in the form of an anonymous gossip columnist, known only as Lady Whistledown. She hears every word and publishes every scrap of scandal for everyone to read. Trying to work out who she is is just one of the addictive throughlines of the series. What do we know about Bridgerton Season 5 and 6?

Reader beware: If you aren’t currently up-to-date with Bridgerton, don’t read any further.

Towards the end of Season Four of Bridgerton, Francesca’s husband, John Stirling, dies very suddenly from an underlying illness. Obviously heartbroken, she initially retreats while grieving her husband’s death, but is brought back into the family fold and society by John’s cousin, Michaela Stirling. Her vivacious energy and traditional yet unorthodox grieving methods from her and John’s homeland in Scotland provide a foothold for Francesca to move on.
The two women who began the season very indifferent to one another soon bonded while John was alive and continued to grow closer after his death, clinging to one another in their grief. The season ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, with Francesca asking Michaela to stay with her, her initially agreeing but then fleeing in the night.

Predictions for Bridgerton Season 5 and 6

All signs point to a romantic entanglement storyline between Francesca and Michaela in either the next or following season. It’s heavily rumoured their storyline will take place two years after John’s death, as Francesca enters the marriage mart again with practical rather than emotional motives.
John’s cousin Michaela returns to London to manage the Kilmartin estate, bringing Francesca’s complicated feelings to the surface and forcing her to confront what she really wants and which path she should take. As for the other Bridgerton siblings, it has been heavily rumoured that Eloise will make her way down the aisle, with the season starting with the wedding itself instead of following the show’s usual chronological order.
In terms of new cast members, Tega Alexander (Red Eye, MobLand) will play Christopher Anderson (Lord Marcus Anderson’s son), Jacqueline Boatswain (Red Eye, The Marlow Murder Club) is cast as Helen Stirling (Michaela’s mother and the late John Stirling’s aunt), Anwar Aroussi (The Reformation of Sister Edith) is cast as Lord Swallow and Gemma Knight Jones (MobLand) will play Lady Elizabeth Ashworth (an old friend and confidante to Michaela).
