CBS confirms major schedule change
CBS has officially moved ‘Matlock’ season 3 from its traditional fall slot to a midseason 2027 premiere, likely in January after the holiday break. The decision was part of a broader network reshuffle that also affected shows like ‘Ghosts’ and ‘NCIS: Sydney.’ The Thursday 9 p.m. slot will be taken over by ‘Elsbeth’ season 4, with ‘Matlock’ returning later in the season.
Showrunner sought extra prep time
Jennie Snyder Urman asked CBS to delay season 3 so the writers could fully map out the aftermath of the season 2 finale. She explained that wrapping up the Wellbrexa case required emotional and narrative closure, necessitating a creative reset. Urman emphasized wanting to avoid dragging out old storylines and instead focus on building a strong foundation for future seasons. Good Housekeeping + 1
“I just feel like we had so much stuff to think about because we really landed the plane on this, and we really thought that was important because we didn’t want to keep dragging out the same story, and the characters have to get to someplace real emotionally. So we really, when we took this two-hour finale and really paid a lot of things off, what came with that was I’m going to need time after that to really build the architecture so that we have it for the next seasons. I’m excited about it, but I am also grateful because we needed a little bit of time.”
Season 3 to feature time jump and new mystery
‘Matlock’ season 3 will begin six to nine months after the events of the season 2 finale, according to showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman. This new chapter will see Matty and Olympia working from a new office and tackling a completely different case from the Wellbrexa storyline. The change in setting and narrative direction reflects the show’s planned reset for its third season.
From Wellbrexa to a new chapter
Season 2 concluded with Madeline and Olympia bringing down the Wellbrexa conspiracy, ending the show’s original premise. Despite the closure, Madeline chooses to continue her double life as Matlock, setting the stage for new legal battles. This narrative pivot opens the door for fresh conflicts and character development in season 3.
