Bridgerton Season 5 To Be Released In 2027

Bridgerton is doing something it has never done before. Netflix confirmed at its upfront presentation that Season 5 will premiere in 2027, meaning for the first time in the show’s history, two consecutive seasons will air in consecutive calendar years.

The two-year gap between seasons that has defined the Shondaland series since its December 2020 debut is, for this instalment at least, officially broken.

Why This Is The First Time ‘Bridgerton’ Has Done This

Season 5’s 2027 premiere breaks that pattern for the first time, delivering back-to-back seasons within back-to-back calendar years.
To achieve it, Netflix began production on Season 5 in March 2026, just weeks after the February 26 premiere of Season 4, Part 2. This is the fastest production turnaround in the show’s history, surpassing Season 4, which itself began filming two months after Season 3 ,Part 2 debuted, per Deadline.

Speaking at the upfront, Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria made the announcement to advertisers in New York, with the streamer framing the accelerated schedule as a deliberate move to close the gap for audiences, per Variety.
What ‘Bridgerton’ Season 5 Is About

Per the official synopsis, Francesca re-enters the marriage mart for practical reasons. When John’s cousin Michaela, played by Masali Baduza, returns to London to manage the Kilmartin estate, Francesca’s complicated feelings force her to question whether to pursue a pragmatic future or follow her deeper passions. The season is based on Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked, albeit with significant differences.

‘Bridgerton’ Season 5 Makes History In More Ways Than One
The accelerated release schedule is not the only record Season 5 is breaking. This is the show’s first season to center a queer romance — Francesca and Michaela’s — as its primary love story, making it the first sapphic-led season in the Bridgerton universe.

Showrunner Jess Brownell told Netflix Tudum in March: “More than ever, season five is going to be about yearning. It feels groundbreaking. To make an entire Bridgerton season about a sapphic relationship feels huge.”

Dodd told Tudum in April that queer people “have always existed” and that she and Baduza want to deliver “a realistic view of queer love onscreen” with a happy ending. Baduza described the opportunity as giving queer audiences “a happily ever after.”

New Cast Members And What We Know About The Story
Three new cast members have been confirmed for Season 5: Tega Alexander, Jacqueline Boatswain, and Gemma Knight Jones, per Deadline. Their specific roles have not been detailed in pre-production materials at time of publication. The season is confirmed to run eight episodes, per Variety, and is filming outside London. The show was renewed simultaneously (and unsurprisingly, although you can never be sure with Netflix) for Season 5 and Season 6 in May 2025.

Where ‘Bridgerton’ Stands As A Franchise

The accelerated production reflects how much Netflix values the franchise commercially. The Bridgerton universe has appeared on Netflix’s Global Top 10 more than 60 times, reaching the local Top 10 in every tracked country. Seasons 1 and 3 each crossed 100 million views in their first 91 days, placing both on Netflix’s all-time Most Popular TV List.

Season 5 is executive produced by showrunner Jess Brownell alongside Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Tom Verica, and Chris Van Dusen, per Deadline. Following Season 5, the remaining Bridgerton siblings yet to receive their own seasons are Eloise, Gregory, and Hyacinth.

Bridgerton Season 5 premieres in 2027 on Netflix. Season 5 is currently in production.
