In the two decades that it has been on television, Grey’s Anatomy has left a massive impact on the medium, changing the landscape of primetime dramas with its diverse casting, emotionally devastating storytelling, fearless social commentary, and willingness to push the boundaries of what network television could portray.
But did you know it had a global impact as well?
While many American shows are based on imported hits from overseas, Grey’s Anatomy became such a worldwide phenomenon that it inspired international adaptations of its own, proving just how deeply its mix of romance, heartbreak, and high-stakes medical drama resonated across cultures.
Here are a few of the international adaptations it inspired, many of which borrowed iconic elements like storylines and characters from the original series while reimagining them for audiences around the world.

Grey’s Anatomy
United States
2005 – present
The show that introduced the world to parasitic fish that can lodge themselves in genitals, unexploded bombs finding their way into a man’s chest cavity, and doctors possibly having sex with an ex-fiancé’s ghost also delivered completely devastating storylines about the loss of loved ones, scathing takedowns of the American healthcare system, and powerful arcs that spotlighted sexual abuse. Shonda Rhimes created a juggernaut when she launched Grey’s Anatomy in 2005, and ever since, it has remained a defining force of primetime television.
Starring Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, the longest-running scripted primetime series on ABC follows the personal and professional lives of surgical interns, residents, and attending physicians at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, as they navigate life-or-death medical cases, complicated romances, personal tragedies, and the emotional toll that comes with dedicating their lives to saving others.

A corazón abierto (An Open Heart)
Colombia
2010 – 2011
In this telenovela based on Grey’s Anatomy, aspiring surgeon María Alejandra Rivas (Verónica Orozco) is an intern at the highly prestigious Hospital Universitario of Santa María. While there, she quickly finds her people among the talented and hard-working interns, and makes a love connection with Dr. Andrés Guerra (Rafael Novoa), the Colombian television equivalent of Derek Shepherd/”McDreamy.”
María Alejandra has a lot to prove. Not only is the program challenging, but she is the daughter of one of the most celebrated surgeons in the country.
Produced by RCN Televisión in 2010, this highly successful Spanish-language adaptation was supervised by renowned writer Fernando Gaitán and adapted the plot points of the early seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, including Maria Alejandra’s mother suffering from Alzheimer’s.
But a major difference between this version and its American cousin? A corazón abierto only ran for two seasons. With 169 episodes, that’s still nothing to sneeze at, but still nothing compared to our beloved Grey’s, it’s a tiny run.

A corazón abierto (An Open Heart)
Mexico
2011 – 2012
A 2011 co-production between TV Azteca and Disney Media Networks, A corazón abierto followed the journey of the show’s Meredith Grey counterpart, María Alejandra Rivas Carrera (Iliana Fox), as she entered the intern program at a prestigious hospital, where she balanced the brutal demands of emergency medicine.
In addition to dealing with the legacy of her widely acclaimed surgeon mother, whose reputation she constantly struggles to live up to, María Alejandra is surrounded by a close-knit group of fellow interns who serve as counterparts to characters from the American version. These include Javier Burgos (Rodrigo Abed), the series’ version of Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington), Bruno Bautista (Leonardo García), inspired by Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), Mauricio Hernández (Alejandro Lukini), the show’s Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) equivalent, Cristina Solórzano (Fran Meric), based on Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), and Isabel Heredia (Laura Palma), the counterpart to Isobel “Izzie” Stevens (Katherine Heigl), among many others.
Like the Colombian version, it was adapted by writer Fernando Gaitán, but the Mexican version of A corazón abierto features a different cast and distinct cultural nuances. The series ran for only two seasons despite a positive reception from audiences.

Doktorlar (Doctors)
Turkey
2006 – 2011
The official Turkish adaptation of the hit series Grey’s Anatomy was very popular, centering on the fast-paced, emotional, and personal lives of surgical interns and attending physicians at an Istanbul hospital. In this version, the drama centers on Ela Altındağ (Yasemin Özilhan), the counterpart to Meredith Grey, an intern who navigates a demanding career, high drama, and the occasional complicated romance.
While Doktorlar takes its core premise, medical cases, and character arcs directly from the first five seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, it adapts the cultural tone to fit Turkish television, with more localized family dynamics.
As with other adaptations, there are counterparts for the other characters as well. Levent Atahanlı (Kutsi) is the Derek Shepherd (“McDreamy”) character. At the same time, Zenan (Melike Güner) stands in for Cristina Yang, Hasan Turay (Yağmur Atacan) for George O’Malley (T. R. Knight), and Kader Denizhan (Aysun Kayacı) for Izzie Stevens, just to name a few.
