Following the nail-biting ending of season 14, Firehouse 51 faces one of the biggest life-or-death moments in the series’ history. Will season 15 witness another heartbreaking sacrifice to protect the Firehouse 51 family?
If there’s one thing Chicago Fire always does well, it’s keeping the audience guessing.
At the end of season 14, a devastating fire turned Firehouse 51 into the epicenter of disaster. Squad 3, Mouch, and many others were trapped as the building collapsed, while Truck 81 was also in extreme danger. This was considered one of the most tense cliffhangers since Otis’s death in season 8.
This makes the biggest question before season 15 not “Who will be saved?” but rather:
Firehouse 51 has never been immune to loss. Throughout its more than a decade on air, Chicago Fire has repeatedly shocked viewers. Leslie Shay passed away at the beginning of season 3. Otis died in a factory explosion in season 8. Matthew Casey left Firehouse to focus on family responsibilities. Wallace Boden also gradually shifted to a more managerial role.
Each time a significant character leaves, it opens a new chapter for Firehouse 51. Therefore, if season 15 truly begins with a tragedy, it wouldn’t be too surprising for long-time viewers.
The characters at highest risk are: Christopher Herrmann, Joe Cruz, Randall “Mouch” McHolland, Kelly Severide. A new character or one who has just joined Firehouse 51 could sacrifice themselves to protect the team, creating emotional tension while avoiding drastic changes to the core cast.
Beyond the on-screen story, Chicago Fire is also entering a transitional phase behind the scenes as Victor Teran takes over as showrunner from Andrea Newman. This could bring a fresh storytelling approach, a different pace, and bolder decisions regarding familiar characters.

Looking at the history of Chicago Fire, almost every major turning point has been linked to a sacrifice. Shay changed Severide’s life. Otis made Cruz more mature than ever. Casey left to open up new leadership roles for Severide and Kidd.
Season 15 will likely continue that tradition. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the death of a main character, but it’s almost certain that Firehouse 51 will pay a heavy price to overcome the disaster at the end of season 14.
What worries fans isn’t whether everyone survives, but whether, after that fire, Firehouse 51 will still be the Firehouse 51 we once knew?
