CBS shifts ‘Matlock’ to midseason 2027
CBS has confirmed that ‘Matlock’ season 3 will premiere in early 2027, likely January, instead of its usual fall slot. The move places it in the network’s midseason schedule alongside ‘Einstein,’ while its Thursday time slot will be filled by ‘Elsbeth’ and new legal drama ‘Cupertino.’ This scheduling change follows CBS’ April 15 lineup shakeup affecting multiple series, including ‘Ghosts’ and ‘NCIS
Time jump launches new chapter
Season 3 will open six to nine months after the season 2 finale, marking a departure from the direct pickups of past seasons. Matty and Olympia will be working in a new firm, tackling a case unrelated to the Wellbrexa scandal. This soft reboot retains key relationships but shifts the narrative focus to fresh legal challenges.
Showrunner prioritizes quality over speed
Jennie Snyder Urman requested the extended break to give her team time to design the season’s “architecture” and ensure the new mystery is airtight. She described the change as a “big reset” and expressed gratitude for CBS’ support, emphasizing that quality is paramount. Urman acknowledged the wait may disappoint fans but believes the payoff will be worth it.
“Sad for audiences, but actually really good for me and the writers because I want us to plot this new mystery and make sure it’s airtight. We had a lot of pieces going in, so we really had to create this new piece of it. I feel lucky that the network’s giving us time to get it right because I don’t want the quality to drop.”
From Wellbrexa to fresh stakes
The two-hour season 2 finale concluded the Wellbrexa opioid cover-up case, with major arrests and personal reckonings for the characters. Matty’s victory came with emotional costs, setting the stage for characters to reassess their paths. The upcoming season’s new case will bring different risks, with Urman hinting it will challenge characters both personally and professionally.
