Grey’s Anatomy Has a Ben Warren Problem — And Season 23 Needs to Fix It Fast
For years, Ben Warren has been one of the Grey’s Anatomy universe’s most fascinating characters.
He’s been an anesthesiologist. A surgical resident. A firefighter. Now, he’s back at Grey Sloan Memorial as a plastics fellow.
On paper, that sounds like the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
In reality, it raises one unavoidable question: What is Ben Warren’s true purpose on the show now?
Ben has reinvented himself more times than almost any other character in the franchise. While that made him unpredictable, it also made him compelling. Every career change came with real stakes, forcing him to adapt while giving viewers a fresh side of the character.
But after returning from Station 19, his latest transition feels different.
Instead of feeling like the start of a major storyline, Ben’s return has largely served as a way to support the stories of other characters.
His new role has already been used to establish connections with Toni, while much of the attention remains focused on Amelia and the growing personal drama surrounding her.
That leaves Ben in an awkward position.
Rather than driving the story, one of Grey Sloan’s longest-running characters risks becoming little more than a supporting piece in someone else’s narrative.
That’s surprising considering everything Ben has been through.
He’s survived life-threatening emergencies, switched careers multiple times, and built one of television’s strongest marriages alongside Miranda Bailey. Few characters have accumulated as much life experience—or as much potential for new stories.
Yet Season 22 barely scratched the surface.
Season 23 has the chance to change that.
Ben’s return to surgery should create impossible cases, difficult ethical decisions, and professional challenges that test whether he can truly rebuild his career after years away from the operating room.
Those are the kinds of stories that made Grey’s Anatomy a hit in the first place.
If the writers instead keep Ben on the sidelines as a supporting character in other people’s storylines, they’ll be wasting one of the franchise’s most versatile characters.
After everything Ben Warren has accomplished, he deserves to be more than just someone else’s plot device.
