Jason George Thought Grey’s Anatomy Was Firing Him—Until One Phone Call Changed Everything
Longtime Grey’s Anatomy star Jason George has revealed that one of the most nerve-racking moments of his career started with a single unexpected phone call.
Before he became a central figure in the Grey’s Anatomy universe and later a leading face on Station 19, George admitted he was convinced producers were about to write Ben Warren out of the series.
Instead, they had something entirely different in mind.
Recalling the moment in a recent interview, George said he received a call from the show’s creative team and immediately assumed the worst.
“I thought it was a call to say, ‘Sorry, man, we’re writing Ben off the show,'” he admitted.
What happened next completely changed the trajectory of his career.
Rather than ending Ben Warren’s story, producers offered George a starring role in Grey’s Anatomy’s upcoming firefighter spinoff, Station 19. The opportunity allowed the character to expand beyond Grey Sloan Memorial while remaining part of one of television’s biggest franchises.
The actor said the experience reinforced his trust in the Grey’s Anatomy producers, praising them for communicating openly with cast members instead of blindsiding them with unexpected exits.
George contrasted his experience with stories he’s heard from other actors, who sometimes don’t learn they’re leaving a series until the final table read for their last episode.
“That would be completely blindsiding,” he explained.
His comments arrive at a particularly emotional time for Grey’s Anatomy. Following the departures of longtime stars Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver after Season 22, many fans have questioned how the series handles major cast changes behind the scenes.
For George, however, transparency has always been one of the franchise’s biggest strengths.
Ironically, the phone call he feared would end his Grey’s Anatomy journey became the one that expanded it, turning Ben Warren into one of the franchise’s most recognizable and longest-running characters.
Now, with George expecting to return for Season 23, that unexpected conversation years ago continues to shape both his career and the future of Grey’s Anatomy.
