Who is Bridgerton Season 5’s new Lady Whistledown? Is it Alice Mondrich? Hyacinth Bridgerton? Mrs. Varley? Or someone completely unexpected?

Confirmed to premiere in 2027, Bridgerton Season 5 adapts Julia Quinn’s Book 6, “When He Was Wicked,” chronicling the love story of Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza). But despite adapting one of the most popular novels, the upcoming season enters uncharted territory with the arrival of an all-new purveyor of ton gossip, taking on the Lady Whistledown moniker. In the books, there’s never a new Lady Whistledown: Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) is the one and only, and when her secret pseudonym is discovered, she sets down her pen and no longer publishes columns. For its fifth season, Netflix’s Bridgerton takes a different approach with a new Lady Whistledown — opening up a whole new mystery exclusive to the show. The identity of the new Whistledown isn’t one that can be solved by reading the books; rather, fans are left to theorise among themselves.

In Bridgerton Season 4, we see Penelope struggle to come to terms with her Whistledown alter-ego. She works alongside Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel), gathering societal gossip to deliver direct to the Queen herself, but this time, with her real identity no longer a mystery, it’s no longer the same. It’s not just writer’s block, but a deeper conflict after seeing first-hand the impact of her musings. Where writing as Lady Whistledown was once fun, becomes a burden and a hard weight to carry.“For everyone in the ton, Whistledown functions just as this palace does for you. It keeps them trapped, watched, scrutinized,” Penelope confided to Queen Charlotte in Season 4. “Knowing what it feels like to be so confined, would it not be pleasant to allow them to simply live their lives the way they wish? Without fear?”

Who Is The New Lady Whistledown In Bridgerton Season 5
By the end of Season 4, Penelope officially retires the pen. However, the Whistledown character continues. In the season’s epilogue, we’re greeted with Julie Andrews’ familiar Whistledown voice, but the words are from a different, anonymous author. “Are you perhaps feeling a little shock? You thought I was gone for good, but far too much transpires for this author to remain silent,” the mystery new Lady Whistledown writes in her debut society paper. “It is assuredly a reunion rooted in care and love. Though this time, with a very different author.”
The arrival of a new Lady Whistledown allows the show to hold its own mysteries, and to not have its secrets clipped by viewers looking to the source material for answers. “Penelope was Julia Quinn’s Whistledown, so we knew we couldn’t really play with that reveal for too long because people could just Google it,” showrunner Jess Brownell told Netflix TUDUM. “But now, we get to play with audience expectations.”

Penelope had a good run as Lady Whistledown, penning dozens of society papers until she, officially, outed herself as the author to all of the ton in the Season 3 finale. “Shonda [Rhimes] and I had a conversation towards the end of season 3 where we talked about what would happen with Whistledown after Penelope comes forward,” Brownell told Entertainment Weekly. “And we knew that we weren’t going to get multiple seasons out of her being a public Whistledown, because it’s lost a bit of its stakes now that the whole world knows who she is.”

The idea of planting a new Whistledown in the ton came naturally; it adds mystique for viewers. “We thought, what better way to get to create a genuine mystery with Whistledown than to have someone new take it over?” she explained. “So Shonda and I have an idea about who Whistledown is and that’s what we’re writing toward.”
The identity of our latest Whistledown won’t be unveiled quickly, but there will be hints should fans want to clutch at straws. “We’ll definitely be planting some clues over the next few seasons for people to hopefully have their own guesses,” she added.
The Season 4 epilogue wasn’t just setting up a new Lady Whistledown story arc for the upcoming season — the writers want to keep this plot line going for at least a couple of seasons. “I’ll say it won’t be revealed in season 5,” Brownell teased. “I can say that we’ve already finished writing season 5, so beyond that, I can’t say for sure, but we will play with the mystery for a little while.”
Out of all the ton, there are three characters who stand out the most as potential Lady Whistledown contenders among fan speculation: Mrs. Varley (Lorraine Ashbourne), Hyacinth Bridgerton (Florence Hunt), and Alice Mondrich (Emma Naomi). These three names dominate social media theories when scrolling through Reddit, X, and Facebook.

The argument for Mrs. Varley is obvious. As a servant and dresser in the Featherington household, she’s a confidant and lowkey has access to pretty much every secret, scandal, and private conversation that goes on. Being in such an environment very much lends itself penning gossip papers.

Hyacinth Bridgerton is another popular candidate. Sharp-witted, cheeky, and intelligent beyond her years, she’s got all the hallmarks of a perfect gossip-spinner. She’s a regular at social gatherings too, making her well-suited to gathering scandals and gossip.

Lastly, Alice Mondrich is a perfectly plausible Whistledown. She’s climbed up the social latter, placing herself in inner circles, making her well-suited to gathering gossip. By the end of Season 4, she Queen Charlotte’s new lady-in-waiting. If that isn’t a key position to gather intelligence, what is? Additionally, Alice Mondrich is not a character in the books. Given that the character was created specifically for the show, there’s extra scope to shape her character, especially in regard to making her the next Whistledown.

Other theories get a bit exaggerated, with some fans suggesting Madame Delacroix, Eloise, and Posy as possible candidates. While we can’t rule anything out, those seem unlikely.
Bridgerton fans are full of theories about who will become the new Lady Whistledown after Penelope’s identity was revealed. Here are some of the most popular predictions circulating on X:
