Fans of the beloved Netflix series “Bridgerton” are buzzing with excitement after it was announced that season five will be released in 2027.

On May 13, Netflix announced the news during its upfront presentation in New York, where the streamer confirmed the exciting news.

Season five’s storyline is centred around the budding romance between Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling two years after the death of Francesca’s husband, John Stirling.

The upcoming season explores a more complex and reflective romantic storyline than previous seasons, focusing on Francesca, who is portrayed as the more reserved and quieter Bridgerton sibling.

In more ways than one, the new season is already making history. Firstly, this marks the first time the show will release consecutive seasons a year apart, with season four having been released in 2026.

It is also the show’s first-ever queer-centered storyline, which will be portrayed by Hannah Hodd, who plays the role of Francesca and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza.
According to Netflix’s Tudum, the showrunner, Jess Brownell, has already given fans a little sneak peek of what the upcoming season will entail.

“More than ever, season five is going to be about yearning,” Brownell revealed in March.

“It feels groundbreaking. Obviously, there are a lot of great shows that have depicted queer love. We’re not the first by any means.”

She further added that while it is exciting to explore Francesca and Micheala’s connection, Brownell shared that she wants fans to resonate with their love story.

“I’ve said from the beginning that this show, in so many ways, is about allowing people to see themselves represented, allowing themselves to dream, and imagine themselves in these fantastical roles.

“It never felt right to not be inclusive of queer love as well within that fantasy,” Brownell said.

Earlier this year, shortly after part two of season four was released, it was announced that season five had already begun filming in London.

Fans can expect more seasons to be released, considering that we still have more Bridgerton siblings that deserve their own storylines, including Eloise, Gregory and Hyacinth.
