The “Grey’s Anatomy” universe is once again expanding – but this time, way beyond Seattle.

ABC has ordered a new spinoff series of the long-running medical drama set to premiere in the middle of 2027, the network confirmed to USA TODAY on Tuesday, May 19. Creator Shonda Rhimes and executive producer Meg Marinis are both set to write the show, while star Ellen Pompeo returns as an executive producer.

The one-hour medical series will take place in West Texas and follow a rural medical center that offers patients a last chance for care before “miles of nowhere,” according to ABC.

“This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from ‘Grey’s’ for more than two decades – all set in my home state of Texas,” Marinis said in a statement. “I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”

The network did not reveal whether the spinoff will star any current or former “Grey’s Anatomy” actors or feature an all-new cast.

New spinoff marks fourth show in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ franchise

The new series set in Texas will be the third spinoff series to air since “Grey’s Anatomy” first premiered in 2005.

Toward the end of “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 3, ABC launched a backdoor pilot episode of its first spinoff series, “Private Practice,” and premiered the new series in 2007. That series followed Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh), who left Seattle Grace Memorial Hospital after her divorce from Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), to work in a private medical firm in Los Angeles with some former friends.

The show, which included multiple crossovers with “Grey’s,” aired for six seasons until 2013. The series introduced fans to Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorscone), who guest-starred on “Grey’s” in Seasons 7 and 8 before becoming a series regular in Season 11 and staying a staple character ever since.

“Station 19” ran for seven seasons from 2018 to 2024, following a firefighter team in Seattle that regularly crossed paths with the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital surgeons. The series largely followed Ben Warren (Jason George), who is married to Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), and who returned to being a series regular on “Grey’s” when the spinoff ended.

Season 22 of “Grey’s” concluded on May 7 . The season also saw the firing of Dr. Benson Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.), leaving viewers wondering whether they will see him again.
