An empty space in a Texas home: A look back at the legacy of the recently deceased actor Young Sheldon hue01

What happens when a vivacious, perky, wannabe actress moves across the hall from two Caltech physicists whose idea of a big Saturday night is a rousing game of Dungeons and Dragons? Comedy gold. That’s what happens.

After debuting in 2007, The Big Bang Theory entertained viewers with the everyday trivialities and obsessions of friends who work in science. As niche and nerdy as the premise sounds, audiences gradually allowed Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki to teach them about dark matter and the inner workings of Star Trek. Before anyone knew it, the brainchild of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady was a 12-season cultural sensation.

Since making their final walk up those apartment steps, the show’s actors have continued to star in film, television, and theater — among other career milestones. Read on to find out what the gang has been up to since Sheldon won his Pulitzer Prize.

By sheer volume, the bulk of Jim Parsons’ résumé is his four-time Emmy-winning stint as the socially awkward Sheldon Cooper. That’s 279 episodes, to be specific.

While neurotically knocking three times on every door (Knock-knock-knock. “Penny?”) on the Big Bang set, Parsons squeezed in a handful of major movies, including a memorable cameo in The Muppets (2011) and a key supporting role in the Best Picture-nominated Hidden Figures (2016).

The actor also lent his voice to the Big Bang prequel series, Young Sheldon, as well as the animated movie Home (2015), alongside Rihanna.

Once Big Bang wrapped, Parsons returned to his theatrical roots, where he headlined revivals of A Man of No Importance and Our Town. He continues to produce projects through his company, That’s Wonderful Productions, which he founded with his husband, Todd Spiewak, in 2015.

Meanwhile, his movie career continued with Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019), The Boys in the Band (2020), and Spoiler Alert (2022).

When asked in 2024 if he would ever consider reprising his role as Sheldon Cooper, his answer was a gentle but open-ended “no.”

Johnny Galecki (Leonard)

Johnny Galecki was one of the show’s more familiar faces from the beginning, having played Rusty Griswold in the holiday classic National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989) and David Healy on the hit sitcom Roseanne.

By now, however, most know him as the lovable, cello-playing geek Leonard Hofstadter who married the pretty blonde waitress. The fact that he and Penny had such great chemistry onscreen probably contributed to Galecki and Kaley Cuoco falling in love off in the real world.

With Big Bang as his day job, the Illinois native carved out time for a handful of other projects. That included high-profile movies like Hancock (2008), the star-studded sci-fi flick In Time (2011), and the franchise sequel Rings (2017). He also reprised his Roseanne role on The Conners.

Galecki took a seven-year hiatus from acting after The Big Bang Theory, but revealed his return in July 2026: He will play famed playwright Tennessee Williams in a production of Kowalski at Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre Company.

After moving from Los Angeles to the Nashville area in early 2020, Galecki married his wife, Morgan, and welcomed a daughter. Along with his son from a previous relationship, the private family of four enjoys trips to Disney World, where we can safely assume lightsabers are purchased for all.

Kaley Cuoco (Penny)

If anyone can rally the troops for a reunion, it’s the self-appointed Queen of the Nerds, Penny Hofstadter. Like much of the cast, this is the role that made Kaley Cuoco a household name.

“I spent 12 years playing that role, and it really set off my career,” she told EW in 2024. “I owe a lot to that character, to that show, to Chuck Lorre. It was some of the best years of my life, and some of the most fun I’ve ever had… I would absolutely reprise that role. I love that character, and I always will.”

Until that day comes, Cuoco is wasting no time filling out her TV résumé. She’s barely slowed down, most notably earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for HBO Max’s thriller The Flight Attendant. She followed that up with the dark comedy Based on a True Story and the miniseries Vanished. The actress also lends her voice to the title role of the adult animated series Harley Quinn.

The comedy veteran, whose career officially launched with 8 Simple Rules and a run on Charmed, has recently starred in such genre-bending rom-coms as Meet Cute (2022) and Role Play (2024).

Cuoco is engaged to actor Tom Pelphrey. They share a daughter, Matilda, and, as of June 2026, have another child on the way.

Simon Helberg (Howard)

Mister Wolowitz may not have a PhD, but Simon Helberg could easily earn a doctorate in comedy. How he managed to be both egotistical and charming in those tight little pants is truly remarkable.

And his talent doesn’t stop with his comedic chops. On various occasions, Helberg entertained audiences with his vocal stylings at the keyboard — and even used that skill in Florence Foster Jenkins (2016), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for his supporting role alongside Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant.

Even before his star-making turn, the actor was a low-key fixture on the small screen, with years of guest spots on everything from Sabrina the Teenage Witch (2002) to Arrested Development (2005). He later appeared in such cinephile favorites as the Coens’ A Serious Man (2009) and Leos Carax’s musical Annette (2021), opposite Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard.

The comedy vet recently had a recurring gig as an FBI agent on Poker Face before lining up a regular role on AMC’s Silicon Valley drama The Audacity.

Helberg has been married to Jocelyn Towne for almost two decades. They enjoy a quiet, private life together with their daughter, Adeline, and son, Wilder.

Kunal Nayyar (Raj)

One of the many quirks of Raj Koothrappali, aside from his questionable fashion taste, was selective mutism. But despite his signature character being notoriously unable to speak to the ladies without alcohol present, Kunal Nayyar used his vocal cords as a primary source of income both during and after Big Bang’s run

He voiced Gupta, the angry badger, in Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), Vijay in Nickelodeon’s animated Sanjay and Craig, and the glittering Guy Diamond in the Trolls franchise. Nayyar was even featured in the “first listen” of the movie’s hit “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake.

Nayyar later landed a BAFTA nomination for the British procedural Criminal: UK, and landed the title role in the big-screen dramedy The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry (2022)based on Gabrielle Zevin’s bestselling novel.

With the financial success of The Big Bang Theory, Nayyar and his wife, Neha Kapur, make a point of paying it forward. He says sharing money has given him “the greatest gift,” allowing him to perform generous acts of kindness for “random” strangers: “That’s my masked vigilante thing!”

Mayim Bialik (Amy)

Mayim Bialik is the only “doctor” in The Big Bang Theory cast with an actual doctorate. Who knew that her PhD in neuroscience from UCLA would lead to Amy Farrah Fowler romancing her way into Dr. Sheldon Cooper’s heart?

The former child star, who rose to ’90s fame on Blossom, made a full-time return to acting in Big Bang’s fourth season after years on the fringes of show business. The couple’s sweet love story over the subsequent eight years even reemerged in the prequel series, Young Sheldon, where Shamy appeared in three episodes leading up to the finale.

After adding author to her list of professional accomplishments, Bialik headlined the quirky sitcom Call Me Kat while splitting hosting duties on Jeopardy!

When announcing the news of her Jeopardy! departure in 2023, the actress said she was “incredibly honored to have been nominated for a primetime Emmy for hosting this year” and “deeply grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of the Jeopardy! family.”

Bialik recently landed on the big screen in Jim Jarmusch’s Golden Lion-winning Father Mother Sister Brother (2025), alongside Adam Driver and Tom Waits.

She and her partner, Jonathan Cohen, created a podcast, Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown, which tackles topics related to mental health. She also has two sons with her ex-husband Michael Stone.

Melissa Rauch (Bernadette)

Hearing Bernadette’s voice transform from sweet baby bird to a gravelly one that could rival Mrs. Wolowitz, it’s obvious why Melissa Rauch has built a successful career in voice work. You can hear her in numerous animated projects from franchises including Marvel, Scooby-Doo, and more.

More recently, Rauch stepped out of the recording booth, picked up a gavel, and settled into a starring role on NBC’s Night Court revival. For three seasons, Rauch offered Big Bang fans mini reunions by hosting Nayyar, Helberg, and Bialik as guests on the show.

“I’d be happy to support anything that Melissa Rauch does,” Bialik told EW in 2024. “The fact that there’s so much overlapping interest here and it’s such a great project for her just made me so excited to be even included in the small part of it.”

Rauch has been married to Winston Beigel since 2007. They have a son and daughter together.
