If there’s one sitcom that can make the audience laugh with just a single shout of “Oh, Mr. Sheffield!”, it’s The Nanny. But interestingly: the funniest moments aren’t in the script – they happen right behind the camera.
From endless banter and eye-catching costumes to situations that make the actors struggle to suppress their laughter, the behind-the-scenes of The Nanny is just as chaotic as the Sheffield mansion itself.
1. Fran Fine almost made the entire set… lose control with her laughter
Fran Drescher is famous for her distinctive laugh – a sound fans can instantly recognize.
But on set, that laugh sometimes becomes a dangerous weapon.
Whenever Fran starts a funny line or breaks the seriousness of a scene, her co-stars often have to try to stay calm and not burst out laughing before the camera stops rolling.
Many scenes had to be reshot simply because one of the actors couldn’t stop laughing.
2. Fran Fine’s wardrobe might need… a whole room of its own.
In the show, Fran walks into every room as if it were her personal fashion runway.
In real life, the costume team also has to work at full capacity to manage her “mountain” of clothes.
From brightly colored bodycon dresses, fur coats, high heels to designer outfits, Fran Fine never appears boring.
There’s an unwritten rule for this character:
If the outfit isn’t striking enough, add a little more. And if it’s still not enough, add a little more.
3. Fran and C.C. argue on screen, but behind the scenes it’s a lot of fun.
One of the “specialties” of The Nanny is the confrontation between Fran Fine and C.C. Babcock.
The two constantly bicker, tease each other, and compete for Maxwell Sheffield’s attention.
Interestingly, behind the camera, Fran Drescher and Lauren Lane have a very good relationship.
The famous on-screen arguments actually require incredibly good coordination. If one person changes their dialogue pace, the other must immediately catch up to maintain the comedic rhythm.
4. Niles might be the funniest person in the Sheffield household.
Niles – the perpetually stoic butler – is one of the characters with the most “killer” lines in the show.
What makes the audience laugh is that Niles often delivers incredibly sharp sarcasm with a completely serious expression.
Actor Daniel Davis turned Niles’s coolness into a comedic advantage. He has the ability to turn a simple line into one of the most memorable moments of the episode.
5. Charles Shaughnessy had to learn to cope with “Storm Fran”
Maxwell Sheffield is a refined, calm man who usually tries to keep things under control.
But when Fran Fine appears, almost all of his plans fall apart.
The contrast between the serious Maxwell and the energetic Fran is the source of much of the laughter.
Behind the scenes, this very difference created many interesting moments as the actors had to adjust their acting to maintain a balance between humor and emotion.
6. The child actors grew up with laughter
Nicholle Tom, Benjamin Salisbury, and Madeline Zima – the three Sheffield children – grew up right before the audience’s eyes.
During filming, they were not just child actors but also an important part of creating the family atmosphere of the film.
Many adorable moments between the young characters actually came from the actors’ naturalness, making the Sheffield mansion feel like a real family home.
7. Fran Drescher turned every scene into a fashion show
One thing is certain about Fran Fine: she never “dresses just to get it over with.”
Every appearance had to have a highlight.
The backstage area, therefore, sometimes resembles a mini fashion show, where the crew has to check every detail: hair, jewelry, shoes, colors, and of course… how striking it is.
Because for Fran Fine, walking into the room is not just walking into a room.
It’s an event.
